Day Trip to Skye
25 Apr 2023In last week’s glorious weather we took time out to enjoy a day trip to Skye.
As a pleasant change from driving we opted to travel by bus, using Citylink’s Inverness to Portree service. It’s great! Leaving Inverness at 8:40 and returning by 20:00, we had 5 full hours to explore Portree and enjoy a delightful circular walk around the Scorrybreac Headland. All in all, a leisurely unrushed day.
The route to Skye follows Loch Ness and the dramatic hills around Glen Shiel before reaching the west coast, Eilean Donan Castle and the Skye Bridge, which replaced the former Kyle-Kyleakin Ferry in 1995.
Portree has lots of eateries and an assortment of shops but, after a light lunch our preference was to head out of town to walk amongst emerging green leaves, birdsong and scenery.
The Scorrybreac walk offers fine views: The Cuillin (hidden from Portree itself) form a strking skyline across Portree Bay. If you go no further, it’s well worth going to the end of the tarmac road to enjoy that view – 20 minutes or so from the town centre. Further on, you’ll be rewarded with fine views of Raasay and the imposing cliffs to the north of Portree
This would be a great day out for guests – you can catch the bus opposite Tesco in Tomnahuirich Street, just a few minutes’ walk from the apartment. Booking advised though, particularly in high season.
If you’ve still to sample King Street Apartment, which is centrally located close to Inverness bus and railway stations, check our availabilty here.
